Elementary School

The Elementary School follows a very competitive consensus curriculum established by the Diocese of Richmond. Our curriculum exceeds the requirements for the Standards of Learning for the Commonwealth of Virginia. Students in grades 1, 3, and 5 take the Terra Nova Standardized Test each spring as an indicator of student progress.

Pre-K and Kindergarten

Our Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten classes are a full day program from 8:10 to 2:50 p.m. Monday through Friday. Our classes provide students with an introduction to the cognitive, social emotional, physical and spiritual skills that they will need to start their academic careers. Through hands-on and play activities, as well as a variety of large and small group activities centered on a theme, students develop language, math, fine and gross motor skills while learning a variety of concepts. Social and emotional development is nurtured through the practice of prayers before snack and lunch, the Lord’s Prayer, and prayers for others. This first school experience will affect how he or she will approach learning and overall achievement during his/her life. The thirst of knowledge is what we hope to instill in each child.

Elementary Grades 1-5

In grades 1-5 our focus is based on providing a strong foundation for the students by emphasizing basic skills. Reading, phonics, writing, math, science, social studies, and religion are core components of our elementary school program. Students participate in a weekly art lesson, twice weekly physical education and music classes. Spanish is also offered in the elementary classes once a week. Library class time is used to teach students library skills as well as to provide resources for class projects and books for recreational reading. Students work in the computer lab at scheduled times in addition to opportunities for creative writing and class projects. Their academic experiences are enriched by field trip excursions.

Elementary Enrichment

Students in grades 3-5 have an opportunity to be a part of the “Singing Angaels”, our performing choral group. The group meets after school for rehearsal. They perform at the churches, nursing homes, and community events. The Elementary/Middle School Drama Club is open to students in grades Kindergarten through Eighth Grade. The Drama Club performs a large scale musical each spring. In November, the elementary students participate in their own election for student leaders who will serve on the Student Government Council.

Grades 3, 4 and 5 have begun using the Accelerated Math program in the classroom. This enables the students to move through their math skills at their own pace using technology.

Smart Boards are currently installed in most classrooms to enhance learning in the elementary and middle school classes.
