Girls on the Run at Holy Cross Regional Catholic School
Girls on the Run of Greater Lynchburg, licensed by Girls on the Run International, is a nonprofit organization headquartered in Lynchburg, Virginia. Its mission is to educate and prepare girls age eight to fourteen for a life time of self-respect and healthy living.
The first season was piloted at Holy Cross Regional Catholic School in the Spring of 2006 with two teams of 26 girls. With the sponsorship of Genworth Financial, Holy Cross Regional Catholic School, Riverside Runners, Areva NPG, and many volunteers, this program has grown from serving 26 girls in the first season to serving over 500 girls at 36 different locations throughout the Greater Lynchburg/Region 2000 area for the 2010-2011 academic year!
This twelve week program developed by Molly Barker, MSW, combines training for a 5K running event with self-esteem enhancing, uplifting workouts. The goals of the program are to encourage positive emotional, social, mental, spiritual and physical development, and most importantly, to increase the skills of our girls in healthy decision making while they experience an enormous feeling of achievement and self-empowerment.
Each Fall, HCRS girls from 3rd, 4th and 5th grade come together as a team to experience the GOTR program and train for the Celebration 5K, the culmination of 12 weeks of hard work. They will be joined by other GOTR participants throughout the area to run the 5K and celebrate the realization of their goal.
We invite the HCRS Family to join us on November 19, 2011 in celebrating the accomplishments of our young runners. Whether a spectator or a runner/walker, your support will be a lasting memory as they cross the finish line!
